New spatial analysis of diabetes and hypertension service use

What the analysis found

Mobile phone ownership was the strongest positive predictor of diabetes service utilisation, associated with approximately 10% higher use. It was also associated with approximately 6% higher hypertension service utilisation.

Literacy was consistently associated with higher healthcare utilisation for both conditions. Television ownership had a modest positive association with diabetes service use, while radio ownership was associated with lower diabetes utilisation. Larger household size was the strongest negative predictor of hypertension service utilisation.

Why the findings matter

The results show that communication access, literacy and household structure shape whether people obtain healthcare for chronic conditions. These factors are important when planning equitable NCD services and climate-resilient health systems.
